Continuing their crossbreeding of white cubes, Scandinavian artists Elmgreen & Dragset have created a monument to minimalism à la mode with their latest project, “Prada Marfa.” Located in the barren West Texas landscape, the duo has planned a full-size Prada shop that will be permanently on view from October 1. The store, a new neighbor to pilgrimage sites of Land Art art such as Donald Judd’s Chinati Foundation, has been realized with the support of New York ‘s Art Production Fund and Ballroom Marfa, and will never be open to customers. Rather, it will be left to the elements, providing the unlikely fate of desolation and entropy for the fashion powerhouse. According to the Art Production Fund, Prada has been extremely cooperative with the project, offering assistance with every detail from its Pantones and logo to furniture and interior design. The sun-dried boutique will be stocked with a fresh array of the Fall 2005 line, dating the time capsule for any anthropologists or archaeologists who happen to be passing in the distant future.
