Obscure Records #1 Gavin Bryars – The Sinking of the Titanic

I’ve been listening to this almost non – stop for the past two weeks and I think, maybe it’s time I shared something about it with everyone.

The piece of music is focused on the idea of Bryars’ romantic notion of the music and sounds of the drowning orchestra still playing beneath the waves as the ship continues to go down. However with that simple idea a great piece of music is scored. Compositionally the attempt to metaphorically play the disaster using elements associated with it, songs and hymns, sounds of the ocean, the ship etc. the result is nothing like a radio show – much of the success really comes from the minimal approach to the sound combined with the emotional resonance of the hymns, and the dispassionate scientific examination of the event over a period of time.

It is a piece that seems to continue to open its self while obviously owing time and narrative to an event that the listener clearly knows the outcome to, with a little bit of luck, the listener will never think about that movie.

Do a quick search – this is an easy download to find.

  1. Hi,

I’m Dulce and I work at a company interested in text link advertising.
Most site owners currently consider it an advantageous action to place
a text ad linking to a specific page in your site in exchange for a
reasonable amount of money for a period of time.

I find your website engaging, enterprising, and full of information. With this in mind, placing our link on your site and paying you for this will be a win-win situation for both of us.

Tell me if you’re interested so we can discuss further details about it. I’m looking forward to doing business with you. In any case, you’ve got a great site. Keep it up.

    Best regards,
    Dulce Liebe
