My interests, in sculptural forms or painting is focused on digging out the ignored or under explored aspects of Modernism – most often through a lens of color and mark-making. My current interest in ceramics concerns itself with avoiding the heroic sublime inherent in modernist thought and approach and to try to develop a more open-ended or democratic approach toward these ideas. I’m driven towards “simple” and understandable forms that have varied approaches and meanings in making this work.

The “Painterly Krators” are a re-imagining of the classic Greek vessel that we have seen in art history. I like the fact that the Krator was a communal vessel that was used in gatherings, this community approach is a part of domesticity that I find very interesting.

The Buoys are adaptations and variations on fishermen’s buoys that are literally up and down the North Atlantic. These buoys were originally painted in a way to both be seen and to alert others of ownership of the catch of the day. My Buoys are much the same, while also a gentle play on color-field painting.

This page will have a large update at the end of January.
